Ce vendredi 23 octobre, à l'entame du Grand Prix des États-Unis, The Guardian a rapporté la colère de plusieurs pilotes stars face à l'état très dégradé et bosselé du Circuit of the Americas (COTA), à Austin. En tête des protestations, Max Verstappen, pilote de Red Bull Racing, et Lando Norris, champion du monde en titre chez McLaren. Le premier a publiquement jugé « inacceptable » le niveau de bosses du tracé, en mettant en garde contre des dommages physiques durables pour la santé des pilotes. Le second dénonce l'inaction des instances, malgré les signalements répétés et récurrents adressés à la direction de course. Des antalgiques avant de rouler Lando Norris raconte un quotidien plus prosaïque. Il doit prendre des antalgiques contre les maux de tête avant de monter dans la voiture, à cause des chocs répétés de la tête contre l'appui-tête provoqués par les bosses. « Ce n'est certainement pas une chose agréable », résume-t-il. Verstappen, lui, va plus loin : « Si nous continuons à trouver acceptable de rouler là-dessus, vous allez en souffrir bien davantage. » Les pilotes ont pourtant signalé le problème à de nombreuses reprises, sans que la situation change.
