Alors que le premier iPhone Duo s’apprête à être commercialisé le 23 octobre, Apple travaillerait déjà sur la deuxième génération de son smartphone pliant. Parmi les principales améliorations envisagées figure l’intégration de Face ID, absent du premier modèle en raison des contraintes techniques liées à son format. Selon Mark Gurman de Bloomberg, Apple testerait actuellement plusieurs prototypes équipés de son système de reconnaissance faciale. Si les essais sont concluants, cette évolution pourrait arriver dès l’automne 2027 avec l’iPhone Duo de deuxième génération. La première génération de l'iPhone Duo impose plusieurs compromis par rapport aux iPhone haut de gamme traditionnels. Le smartphone pliant ne dispose notamment ni de Face ID ni de téléobjectif, Apple ayant privilégié Touch ID pour l'authentification biométrique. La situation pourrait rapidement évoluer. D'après Mark Gurman, Apple expérimente actuellement des prototypes d'iPhone Duo intégrant Face ID. La principale particularité de cette solution serait son emplacement : le système de reconnaissance faciale serait dissimulé sous l'écran externe du smartphone. Intégrer Face ID dans un smartphone pliant est plus complexe que sur un iPhone classique. Ces appareils doivent rester extrêmement fins afin d'éviter une épaisseur excessive une fois repliés. Or, Face ID nécessite plusieurs composants capables notamment de projeter et d'analyser des milliers de points infrarouges sur le visage afin d'en établir une représentation en trois dimensions. Apple devrait donc parvenir à miniaturiser suffisamment cette technologie tout en préservant la finesse du téléphone. Le placement des composants sous l'écran externe pourrait constituer une solution permettant de conserver le design du Duo tout en réintroduisant la reconnaissance faciale.
