Le milieu revient sur le moment précis où tout a basculé, et dément une rumeur tenace. Certaines carrières tiennent à un détail. Celle d'Arthur Vermeeren à Marseille s'est jouée sur un carton rouge. Prêté depuis à l'Antwerp par le RB Leipzig, le milieu belge de 21 ans est revenu sur son passage chez les Phocéens dans un entretien accordé à Het Laatste Nieuws, relayé par Maxifoot. Et il pointe sans détour le tournant de sa saison : son expulsion face à Nantes, en janvier dernier. « J'avais plutôt bien commencé à Marseille. Jusqu'à ce carton rouge stupide. Ça a tout changé pour moi », reconnaît-il. Une autocritique sans fard. De Zerbi, « très dur et direct » Le Belge évoque aussi sa relation avec Roberto De Zerbi, alors entraîneur de l'OM. Sans amertume, mais avec lucidité. « De Zerbi ne pensait pas à mal, il est simplement très dur et direct. Il m'accordait beaucoup de confiance et, quand on commet une telle erreur, il faut en assumer les conséquences », explique-t-il. Avant de résumer la suite : « J'ai très peu joué dans les semaines et les mois qui ont suivi. C'était difficile. » Rarement un joueur aura aussi clairement assumé sa part de responsabilité dans un passage raté. Pas de règlement de comptes, pas d'accusation. Juste un constat. La bagarre avec Kondogbia ? « Complètement faux » Il y a en revanche un sujet sur lequel Vermeeren tient à remettre les choses au clair : la supposée altercation avec Geoffrey Kondogbia à l'entraînement, qui avait fait couler beaucoup d'encre. « C'est complètement faux. Les médias en ont fait tout un cirque. Il y avait des duels engagés et de la frustration, mais une bagarre ? Non », tranche-t-il. Une mise au point qui intervient alors que l'OM traverse une nouvelle période de turbulences, avant-dernier de Ligue 1 et sur une série de cinq défaites toutes compétitions confondues.
