Pourtant, au moins quatre sites religieux disséminés dans le monde entier affirment être en possession du crâne de cet influent personnage chrétien. Jean le Baptiste était plus qu’un prédicateur,  il fut l’homme qui baptisa Jésus . Souvent considéré comme précurseur du Christ, il aurait été, selon la Bible, le cousin de Jésus. Et à l’instar de son parent prophétique, Jean le Baptiste mourut pour ses croyances. Les récits de la mort de Jean le Baptiste varient, mais un aspect de sa fin est enraciné dans la tradition chrétienne : sa décapitation. Mais qu’est-il advenu de sa tête ? Cela dépend à qui on pose la question, car au Moyen Âge, les reliques religieuses ont fait l’objet d’un important commerce.   LA MORT DE JEAN LE BAPTISTE ET L’ESSOR DU COMMERCE DES RELIQUES Les trois évangiles synoptiques ( Matthieu, Marc et Luc ) s’accordent à dire que Jean le Baptiste fut décapité sur ordre d’Hérode Antipas, dirigeant de la Galilée.  D’après le chapitre 14 de l’Évangile selon Matthieu , Hérode emprisonna Jean le Baptiste, car ce dernier avait critiqué son mariage avec l’ancienne femme de son frère, Hérodiade. Lorsque cette dernière poussa sa fille Salomé à demander à Hérode la tête du prédicateur sur un plateau, le tétrarque accéda à sa demande. Après la décapitation de Jean le Baptiste, son corps aurait été enterré à Sebaste de Samarie, en actuelle Palestine. Mais sa tête fut  découverte puis enterrée de nouveau à de multiples reprises au cours des siècles qui suivirent et fit son chemin à travers la région sans qu’on ne puisse toutefois s’accorder sur les dates, les endroits et les façons dont cela s’était fait.
